Sharing Time Ideas from the 2018 Outline
Identify the doctrine (seeing a picture): Show a picture of Adam and Eve. Tell the children that Adam and Eve were the first people to come to earth and receive bodies; they were placed in a garden called Eden. Explain that when they left the garden, it became possible for us to come to earth; their leaving the garden is called the Fall. Write “The Fall was part of God’s plan” on the board, and have the children say it with you.
Encourage understanding (discussing the doctrine): Draw two circles on the board, and label one spirit worldand the other earth. Explain that when Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Eden, we were in the spirit world. Show a picture of some children, and tape it on the board in the “spirit world” circle. Explain that after Adam and Eve left the garden, we could come to the earth. Invite a child to move the picture of the children to the “earth” circle. Ask the children to put their thumbs up if they think the Fall was good, and invite a child to explain why.
Encourage application (playing a matching game): Prepare several pairs of matching phrases representing blessings we experience in mortality (for example, a body, families, choices between good and evil, opportunities to learn, health and sickness, happiness and sadness, joy and pain). Place the papers facedown on the board. Invite children to take turns choosing two papers to see if the phrases match. When a match is found, discuss why it is a blessing.
Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas
For this week’s Sharing Time I have a fun “grab bag” activity to help the children learn about the blessings we experience because of the Fall. I have also included some fun printables to help you out and make preparing a little easier.
For this activity you will need my tree printable, fruit printables, brown paper bags, and items/picture to represent the blessings we experience in mortality. At the front of the primary room you will have your tree, and on the tree you will have fruit. The children will be taking turns choosing a fruit from the tree to decide which bag they will open. After they have found the matching number they will open the bag and guess what blessing it represents.
The Fall Grab Bag Activity
First, print and piece together the tree printable in my pack. Next, you will need to print and cut each of the fruit. The numbered fruit will be placed onto the brown paper bags (or another type of container) and the blank fruit will go onto the tree. Number each of the blank fruit on the back-side of the fruit. Make sure you have the same number of fruit on the tree as you do for each bag.
Inside the brown paper bags you will have clues for the different blessings that we have received because of the Fall. Some of the bessings could include:
Health and Sickness
Happy and Sadness
Joy and Pain
You will need to find objects or pictures to represent each of the items that you choose. Place the items in the bag and then place the numbered fruit onto the front of the bag. The children will come and pick a fruit from the tree, and then find the matching bag to reveal what the blessing is. Using the objects, have the child try to guess what the blessing is. Then explain why that blessing is important.
Other Ways to Play
There are different ways that you could play this to make it a little more challenging. For instance, you could have the children play charades to try and guess what the blessing is. You could write a word on the back of the blank fruit OR you could still place the word and some pictures into a bag.
Another option is to have the child that picks the fruit read clues to the rest of the children to see if they can guess what the blessing is. To do this you will need to come up with a list of clues for the children to read to the Primary.
Yellow Gummy Bear Object Lesson
I think it is important to explain to the children why these are considered blessings. While looking for ideas I came across this cute object lesson using gummy bears to explain opposition (you can check it out HERE).
The idea is to talk about why there are yellow gummy bears. If we didn’t have yellow gummy bears (opposition), then we wouldn’t enjoy the red gummy bears in our lives. I think you could gear this to the kids to make it fun and to help them understand this.
