Heavenly Father’s Plan is a Plan of Happiness: January 2018 Sharing Time Idea

Sharing Time Idea from the 2018 Outline

Identify the doctrine: Write “Heavenly Father’s plan is a plan of happiness” on a piece of paper. Place the paper in a container and wrap it to look like a gift. Hold up the gift and tell the children that inside is something that will bring them happiness. Let them guess what it might be. Then open the gift and have a child read the sentence to the class. Explain that Heavenly Father has a plan so that we can be happy and live with Him again.

Encourage understanding (singing a song and answering questions): Give each class a wordstrip with one of the following questions written on it:

• What does my life have, and where did it begin?

• What was my choice, and what should I seek?

• What should I follow, and to what can I hold fast?

• How will I feel if I follow God’s plan?

Sing the first two lines of “I Will Follow God’s Plan” (CS,164–65), and discuss the answer to the first question. Repeat with the rest of the song and the other questions.

Encourage understanding (finishing a statement): Put pictures representing premortal, mortal, and postmortal life in three separate areas of the room. Draw a happy face on a piece of paper. Tell the children that each time you hold up the happy face, they should say, “Happy.” Stand near the picture of premortal life and describe the Council in Heaven. Whenever possible, let the children finish your statements with “happy” as you hold up the happy face. For example: “Heavenly Father wanted us to be happy. He told us about His plan to send us to earth and receive a body. He said that we could be happy if we obeyed His commandments. He knew that we would need a Savior to help us be happy, because none of us are perfect. When we heard about Heavenly Father’s plan, we were so happy we shouted for joy!” Continue this activity as you move to the other areas and describe the plan of happiness: “You came to your family, and they were so happy when you were born.” “We are happy as we make righteous choices.” “We will be happy to be with our families and Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ forever in the celestial kingdom.” Add details of the plan as appropriate for the ages and understanding of the children.

Encourage application (drawing pictures): Give each child a piece of paper with a happy face and the words “Heavenly Father’s plan is a plan of happiness” on it. Invite them to draw a picture of something in our Heavenly Father’s plan that makes them happy. Testify that the Father’s plan is for our eternal happiness.

Show love: You can increase your love for the children as you pray for them, get to know their interests and concerns, call them by name, and listen attentively to them.

Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas

This week I am sharing some of my favorite past Plan of Salvation Sharing Time Ideas. I don’t have a planned outline, but since this topic is being shared between 2 weeks I figured you could find something that would work into the outline idea. I hope you enjoy the ideas that I share.

Plan of Salvation Sharing Time Idea

This idea I shared back in 2013, but it sounds like such a great attention-grabbing activity that I had to share. Here’s the idea:

You will need to find a large box that will fit several (4-6) helium filled balloons. On each of the balloons write (or attach a piece of paper to each balloon/balloon string), “Heavenly Father’s Plan is a Plan of Happiness”. If you choose to write the message onto pieces of paper and tie the paper to a string, you could draw happy faces onto the balloons, just another idea.

Now that you have your box and balloons, you are going to tape the end of the balloon string to the bottom of the box. Make sure the strings are long enough for the balloons to float out of the box once opened. Tape the box shut and you can then place a big bow on it or go the easy route and just leave it as-is.

For Sharing Time, come in carrying the large box filled with balloons. Hold up the gift and tell the children that inside is something that will bring them happiness. Let them guess what it might be. Invite a child to come to the front a open the box. When they open the box the balloons will float up (and I’m sure the children will be so excited!). You can then have the children unscramble the word strips to complete the sentence. Invite a few children up to the front to hold a balloon, and then you could have the older children come up and unscramble the words. Once the message is unscrambled, have a child read it aloud.

If you drew happy faces on the balloons explain that the ‘gift’ (plan of salvation) brings us happiness (just like the happy balloons).

Skit Idea

For this idea you will be doing a little skit to introduce your Plan of Salvation Sharing Time Idea. Before Primary, ask another adult to be your ‘helper’. Your helper will come into the Primary Room looking lost. You’ll ask her/him if they’re lost and they will answer ‘Yes’. Your helper will then explain that they are trying to find their way back to Heavenly Father, but aren’t sure where they came from or where they are going. Then you’ll ask if they have used their ‘GPS: God’s Plan of Salvation’ (the GPS idea came from Sugardoodle).
You and the children will then show your helper the Plan and explain what it is.

I think the children will really enjoy helping me teach about the plan of salvation. I’m going to ask a Parent or someone from the Presidency to help me out in my skit.

Plan of Salvation Ideas

For the Plan of Salvation part you could have the pieces of the Plan of Salvation in small numbered gift bags. Have a child come up and open bag #1 to reveal the first part of the plan. Place it on a board and then show a picture that represents Pre-mortal life and explain the council in Heaven.

Continue by inviting another child up to the front to open bag #2, and so on. Continue until all bags have been opened and all the pieces of the Plan of Salvation are on the board.

You could also play “Hot Potato” with the gift bags and have the children sing a song while they pass the gift around. When the music stops, have the child holding the gift open it to reveal the part of the Plan.

.

“Encourage Understanding” Idea

I had an idea that might be fun for the “Encourage Understanding “ section from the outline. At the front of the room have a table with a bell in the middle. Invite two children up to the front and tell them that you are going to read a question aloud and they are going to then have to listen to the rest of the Primary children sing a song and listen carefully for the answer. For example, the first pair of children will be listening for the answer to this question:

• What does my life have, and where did it begin?

You can type the answer onto a large piece of paper and have it in front them. Then invite the rest of the Primary to sing, “I Will Follow God’s Plan” (CS,164–65). When the child hears the answer to the question, they must ring the bell and say the answer aloud. You could then discuss the answer for just a minute or write it on a chalkboard. If it is correct have the other child sit down and invite a new child up(you could also ask both children to sit down and invite a new pair up). If the answer is incorrect, give the other child a chance. If neither knows the answer, you could have the children sing the song again or have someone help them out. Continue by moving on to Question #2.

Other Plan of Salvation Ideas

I have some other great ideas that go along with this week’s theme. You can find all of my ideas over HERE. And you can find my Plan of Salvation printables HERE. It’s part of another Sharing Time, but just print out pages 2-3 for the Plan of Salvation printables.

.

I hope you enjoy this week’s Plan of Salvation Sharing Time Idea and are able to use it for your Sharing Time lesson. I would love to hear what you plan on doing, so leave a comment letting me know.

Thanks so much for stopping by. Have a wonderful day and a great Sharing Time!
