Light the World Ornaments & Activity Idea

For the last few years members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have spent the month of December lighting the world by serving others. These last few years my family has hung special ornaments on the tree for each act of service we did as a way to keep track of all the service we had done during the month. The last couple of years we have created Service Stars by folding and gluing beautiful Christmas paper, you can see them here.  This year I decided to have my amazing niece help me create some beautiful ornaments that are easy to print and cut, and perfect for families with young and older children.

Light the World Ornaments and Activity Idea

As you may know, this year the church is not doing a daily calendar, but instead a weekly theme. With the theme in mind, I went and created four shapes to represent each weekly theme. I then emailed my niece my blank ornaments and she got to work doing her doodling magic to create these amazing ornaments!

There are 4 sheets of ornaments that my niece hand-drew. She chose words from the Church’s Light the World calendar to create her ornaments. I think they turned out AMAZING!

HOW TO USE THE LIGHT THE WORLD ORNAMENTS

You could use these however you would like, but here is how I plan on using these adorable Light the World Ornaments for my family.

First, print out the blank ornaments (you’ll probably want to do more than just the 4 pages). Cut them out and then place them on a string with mini clothespins, in a basket, or in a box under the tree.

Sit down with your family and go over the Light the World calendar. Have them think of ways they can participate each week and have them write them down.

At the beginning of each week, show your family the video for that week (there are four videos on mormon.org for each weekly theme). Then show your family the ornament for that week. The circle ornaments are for week 1: Light the World; the mitten ornaments are for week 2: Light Your Community; the heart ornaments are for week 3: Light Your Family; and the star ornaments are for week 4: Light Your Faith

Explain that each time they do an act of service they will receive an ornament to color and hang on the tree (you could also create a banner with the ornaments or place them on a bulletin board in your home). I am also going to have my children write their act of service on the back (I’ll explain why we do this in just a minute).

I love this simple idea, and instead of me doing all the cutting and gluing to make my service stars, my children will be able to color their very own ornament and reflect on how they were able to Light the World!

CHRISTMAS MORNING

On Christmas Morning, before opening presents, we like to take a few of our special ornaments off the Christmas tree and read some of the ways we were able to Light the World during the month. We tell our children that the acts of service they performed is our gift to our Savior. Then we sing Happy Birthday to Jesus. It’s a tradition of my husband’s family.

ANOTHER WAY TO USE MY LIGHT THE WORLD ORNAMENTS

You could print these out and give them to your Young Women and encourage them to find ways to Light the World this Christmas. Place a bulletin board in the Young Women room, and invite them to color their ornaments and place them on the bulletin board each week (or make a cute banner with them).
