Sharing Time Idea from the 2017 Outline
Identify the doctrine (seeing an object lesson): Before Primary, build a structure with blocks, and cover it so the children cannot see it. (If blocks are not available, you could draw a picture on the chalkboard and cover the drawing with a piece of paper.) Describe the hidden structure and how you built it. Then give a few children some blocks and ask them to try to build a structure that matches what you built. When they finish, uncover your structure, and note the differences between the two. Ask the children to rebuild their structure while they look at your example. Explain that many things are easier when you follow an example.
Encourage understanding and application (hearing stories and singing songs): Display pictures and briefly tell a few scripture stories in which young people were good examples (for example, Daniel and his friends refusing to drink the king’s wine [see Daniel 1:5–16]; Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego [see Daniel 3:4–29]; and Daniel in the lions’ den [see Daniel 6]). Show a picture of missionaries, and ask the children how the missionaries are being good examples. Explain that when we set a good example, we are being missionaries because our example can help others want to learn more about Jesus Christ. Share some times when you have seen children in your ward or branch being good examples.
Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas
For this week’s idea I am using this idea that I shared back in 2012 (there’s also some other ideas that I shared back then in the same post). I liked this idea because it incorporates a flashlight, which I thought the children would love. I changed the original idea to incorporate the flashlight a little more to help them find ‘Shining Examples’. I hope you enjoy this week’s idea!
I can Be a Shining Example
On a chalkboard, bulletin board or poster board have a large circle with the phrase ‘I can be a shining example.’ Discuss why being a good example is important. Have someone (an adult preferably) turn off the lights in the Primary room, and turn on a flashlight.
Discuss how the light from the flashlight helps people as it shines. Read aloud the first phrase of 3 Nephi 12:16
. Explain to the children that they are like little lights when they set good examples, because other people watch and follow them.
Tell the children that we can read of some ‘Shinging Examples’
in the scriptures. Around the primary room have several pictures of scripture heroes that were shining examples (for example, Daniel and his friends refusing to drink the king’s wine [see Daniel 1:5–16]; Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego [see Daniel 3:4–29]; and Daniel in the lions’ den [see Daniel 6]
), and also include a picture of missionaries
. Cover the pictures with a blank piece of paper or you can use my ‘Shining Example’ cover below.
For Jr. Primary, invite a child up to the front and hand them the flashlight. Have the child walk around the room shining their light, until they shine their light on a picture. Once they have found a picture, have them reveal the picture. Show the children the picture (you could have the child act as a spotlight and have them shine the flashlight on the picture, or you could turn on the lights. 🙂 Ask if anyone knows who the picture is of. Then discuss the scripture story with the children. After you have shared the story, ask the children how they were good examples/how they were shining examples. Continue by inviting another child up to the front to find a new picture.
You could also have the children sing a song while the child searches for a picture.
For Sr. Primary, you could do the same type of thing, but instead of sharing the story come up with 3-4 clues about the story. Read the clues aloud and have the primary children try to guess who it is. You could choose not to show the picture until after they have guess who it was or uncover the picture as a final clue.

. You could bring in a mirror and hand it to a child and tell them that they are looking at a ‘Shining Example’. Tell the children that they can all be shining examples. Share some times when you have seen children in your ward or branch being good examples.
