You may have seen a recent idea I shared as part of the #MyForeverFamily 30 Day Challenge. I shared a fun Word Search and Crossword Puzzle idea that would be great for Family Home Evening, a Sunday activity, or just to teach your family about their ancestors. Today I am back with another great game idea that focuses on Family History!
This is a fun game that will be perfect for day #22: ‘Map out Your Family Roots’ of the My Forever Family 30 Day challenge. Instead of just grabbing a map and talking about where your ancestors came from…why not make a fun game out of it!?!
I decided to get some inspiration from the popular game, “Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego”. I am loving how it turned out, and I know my kids will love it as well!
‘Where In the World’ Family History Game
Here’s one way to play! First you will need to print out or grab a few supplies.
Family Question Cards: I am sharing a template of the cards I used. All you have to do is add in your information and then print them out. 🙂
First you will need to think of some questions about your ancestors. Some of mine included countries where are ancestors immigrated from, states where grandparents were born, and other interesting facts about our family.
I then got to work creating the cards using the questions I had. Since my children are still a little young I decided to have the question at the top of the card and some clues underneath. On some of the cards I even included a picture of a famous landmark or a flag as the clue. I then provided 4 answers to choose from. Once I created and had all the cards re-sized and on a sheet of paper, I printed and cut them out. Here’s a closer look at one of the cards I created:
Once you have created your cards completed you can print out your maps (or grab some if you have them). We don’t have a world map lying around our house…although my in-laws globe would’ve been awesome, so I just printed a free one offline, HERE!
I enlarged the map so that it fit onto 2 pages, then I cut and taped the two pieces together. I then needed a U.S. map. We have a U.S. states puzzle that would work great, but I decided to print THIS cute one out.
HOW TO PLAY!
You could play this any way you’d like, but here is how I was thinking we’d play.
Split the family/children into 2 teams. Have the teams pick a number to see who goes first. Have the maps on the table and the cards stacked facing down. You could also have some stickers or other type of markers to mark the maps.
Invite the first team to pick a card. Read the question aloud. If they know the answer before you read the clues they are awarded 5 points. If you have to read the clues and then they answer correctly, award them 3 points.
If the team answers incorrectly, the other team has a chance to answer and receive 3 points. If no one knows the answer, no big deal, tell everyone the answer and move on to the next question. 🙂
As you answer each of the answers and find out the location, mark it with a small circle sticker or some other type of marker. When the game is over you and your family can look at the map and see all the different places your ancestors were from.
Creating Your Cards
Today I am sharing a blank card template for you to use. Just right click on the image below and click ‘Copy Image’. Then in Microsoft Word or Pages (on Mac) paste it into a new document. Once it has been pasted into the document you can re-size it to the desired size, my cards ended up measuring approx. 3 3/4″ w X 2.5″ h.
Add a text box over the card and add the information you would like to include. You can then move the text box around to wherever you would like on the card. Just add another text box for the clues and another one for the answers (if using).
Once you have your card all typed up you can copy and paste another card right beside that one and add another question to create a new card.
Keep going until you have 6-8 cards on a sheet (depending on the size of each card). Then PRINT!
Here are some screen shots to explain a little better. 🙂
I hope you enjoy my ‘Where in the World’ family history game that I created just for the #MyForeverFamily challenge. Be sure to stop by Chicken Scratch N’ Sniff, HERE, to read more about the challenge and to see other great ideas that have been shared!
Thanks so much for stopping by! Have a wonderful day!
