Sharing Time Idea from the 2016 Outline
Introduce the doctrine: Divide the children into groups and give each group a phrase from the third article of faith. Have each group stand, in the correct order, and repeat their phrase. Then have the entire Primary stand and repeat the whole article of faith. Repentance Sharing Time Idea
Encourage understanding: Testify that one way the Atonement of Jesus Christ saves us is that it saves us from sin. Show the children a clear glass of water and explain that it represents a person who is free from sin. Drop a small amount of food coloring in the water. Point out how the food coloring spreads throughout the water and makes it no longer clean. Explain that when we sin, we become unclean, like this water. Then add a few drops of liquid bleach to make the water clean again. Explain that when we repent, the Atonement cleanses us from sin and we are forgiven. Show a picture of Christ in Gethsemane. Let the children share what they know about the picture. Testify of Jesus Christ’s love for us and of His willingness to pay the price for our sins.
Encourage application: Using some of the teaching methods modeled in this booklet, teach the children about repentance, which includes feeling sorry, asking for forgiveness, righting the wrong, and not repeating the wrong (see Primary 3, 46–49).
Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas
I decided to take a look at some of my previous ideas that I have shared over the years, trying to spark an idea for this week’s Sharing Time. I saw my Repentance Sharing Time Idea of ‘Sin Spots’ HERE, but I have done that several times, and the children in our ward remember it. For some reason I seem to always do the lesson on Repentance. If you have never done the ‘Sin Spot’ sharing time, it’s a great one! I also thought of the chocolate sauce object Repentance Sharing Time Idea that I first did soo many years ago, and have done it again and again (another great one).
But then I remembered an idea that our family did for FHE several years ago. I had planned on sharing the idea, and never did! Well, now I am FINALLY sharing my idea! It will go great with this week’s Sharing Time idea. Enjoy!
Begin your Sharing Time with the Introduce the Doctrine idea given in the outline. To add a little fun to the idea, separate them by the color they are wearing, by their favorite color, etc. Before hand, type up each of the phrases from the 3rd Article of Faith, and have each phrase on a different color paper or have the font a certain color. Hold up the first phrase and tell have everyone wearing that color come and be in that group. Then move to group 2 and so on.
For the Encourage Understanding section of the idea you can do the great object lesson given in the outline. Be sure to test the activity before hand to make sure it works correctly. 🙂 This activity is always fun for the children. If you have done this in the past, and would like to try something new, give this idea a try! As I was looking for ideas today, I came across this fun object lesson on YouTube, the idea is from Jenny Smith of Mormon Share, click HERE to view the video. All you need is salt, pepper, a plate, and a plastic spoon!
Repentance Sharing Time Idea
Now for the Encourage Application section of the outline! They pretty much leave it up to you, to choose an activity to finish up your Sharing Time. Here is my idea for this week.
You will need these items:
•4 or More Cans
•Sin Can Labels (printable below)
•Back-pack or Bag
Before primary, gather your cans and print out my ‘Sin Can Labels’. You can use the labels I have created or you can create your own using my blank labels.
Cut out the labels and wrap them around your cans and then just add a piece of tape to secure them.
To begin your activity, invite a child up to the front and have them put on the backpack. You can introduce your ‘helper’ and then grab a can. Share the ‘sin’ that is on the can with the other children, and place it in the backpack. Grab another can, read it, and add it to the backpack. Continue until all the cans have been read and placed in the backpack. You can then ask the child if the backpack is a little heavy. If they say ‘NO’, throw in some extra cans. 🙂
Explain to the children that sin ‘CAN’ weigh us down. Show the picture of Christ in Gethsemane again, and explain that because of Christ’s Atonement, our sins ‘CAN’ be forgiven and our load ‘CAN’ be lightened.
I had to share a great comment that someone left me on Facebook. This idea comes from Amy Griffeth, this is what she shared:
“When my friend did this, after the child had a backpack full of cans, she had the child right each wrong and replace the can with love (paper hearts) the Savior’s atonement can fill us with love and it’s lighter and easier to journey through life. So I have always ended the activity with the hearts.”
What a great idea! I loved it, so I had to share with all of you. 🙂 Thanks Amy for sharing with me.
After the child has their backpack full of cans, you can teach them about repentance, which includes: feeling sorry, asking for forgiveness, righting the wrong, and not repeating the wrong.
My husband shared the “ABC’s of Repentance” with me, something they taught while on his mission in New Zealand. I loved the idea, and thought it would help the children remember the steps. I have created a sign and a sheet of handouts with the ABC’s on it. Here’s what they look like:
After you discuss the ABC’s of repentance, you can use Amy’s idea and have the child right each of the wrongs. Just pull one can out at a time, and have them share how they would right the wrong. Then replace the can with a heart.
Close by testifying of Jesus Christ’s love for us and of His willingness to pay the price for our sins.
Repentance Sharing Time Idea.
I hope you find my Sharing Time idea helpful, and are able to use some or all of it for to teach the children in your Ward. This would also make a great FHE lesson!
Thanks so much for stopping by. Have a wonderful day & a great Sharing Time.
