Sharing Time Ideas from the 2017 Outline

Encourage understanding (singing songs): Briefly discuss the following concepts, and then sing the corresponding songs with the children:

•Before I came to earth I lived in heaven (“I Lived in Heaven” [CS, 4]).

•I chose to come to earth and receive a body (“I Am a Child of God” [CS, 2–3]; “The Lord Gave Me a Temple” [CS, 153]).

•I will be baptized and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost (“When I Am Baptized” [CS, 103]; “The Holy Ghost” [CS, 105]).

•I can prepare to go to the temple (“I Love to See the Temple” [CS, 95]; “Families Can Be Together Forever” [CS, 188]).

•I will be resurrected (“He Sent His Son” [CS, 34–35]).

Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas

I usually love the ideas given in the outline, but this week left me a little like, “That’s It?!?” I was having a hard time coming up with something, but then I remembered an idea from last year that I really liked, so I decided to incorporate it into this week’s idea. I hope you like it!

January 2017 Sharing Time Ideas

Before Sharing Time you will need to find some kind of blue print or house plan. If you ever built a house you could use those or you can find some great plans online that you can print. You are also going to need to print out my Plan of Salvation pieces (link below). I loved this one from The Personal Progress Helper and this one from LDS.org, but for this lesson I wanted the pieces larger, so I created my own using these 2 as inspiration. The Personal Progress Helper created some great Plan of Salvation handouts that you could give to the children, you can find them HERE.

Once you have printed and cut out the pieces, you will need to take the pieces of the Plan of Salvation chart and create a blank template where the children will be placing the missing pieces from the Plan of Salvation. I would grab a poster-board/foam board/chalkboard, and trace the pieces to make the blank template. You will also need to print out the Plan of Salvation Tools (link below), if using.

I Chose to Follow God’s Plan

To begin your Sharing Time you are going to show the children the building plans and talk about the importance of following a plan when building. You could even show the children steps of building a home and discuss why it’s important to follow the appropriate steps.

You will then show the children the blank Plan of Salvation that you created and explain to the children that we too have been given a plan. This plan won’t help us build a beautiful home, but it will help us find our way back home to our Father in Heaven.

You could then discuss the plan with the children, and tell them that in the premortal life we chose to follow God’s plan.

Plan of Salvation Tools

Tell the children that today they are going to learn all about the Plan of Salvation, but to help us out, you have brought in some tools. Explain to the children that on each tool is a word, and each word represents a question about Heavenly Father’s plan.

They are going to be listening to a song that will help them answer the question that goes with that tool. To make things a little more fun, you are going to have them play ‘Name That Tune’.

You could do this activity several ways, here is what I was thinking. Before Primary, print and cut-out the Plan of Salvation tools. Along with the tools, you will need the Plan of Salvation pieces. You could simply tape the appropriate part of the plan of salvation to the correct tool or you could place both into a large envelope. I used the statements from the outline to create questions that the children can answer. Here is a key to help you know which tool goes with which part of the plan of salvation:

• Where: Premortal Life

• Who: Birth

• Why: Mortal Life (there are 2 of these)

•What: Resurrection & 3 Degrees of Glory

You could have the tools/envelopes hidden around the room or have them in a toolbox. Invite a child up to the front of the room and have them choose/find a tool. Once they have chosen their tool, have them read the word aloud.

Answering Questions

Then ask the child that chose the tool, to pick another child from the rest of the Primary (or choose one yourself) to come to the front of the room. Have a table at the front of the room, and in the middle of the table have a bell/buzzer. Have the two children stand on either side of the table. Explain that the pianist will begin playing a song, and as soon as they know what song it is, RING the bell. Here is another key of questions/statements and songs.

Once they have identified the song, you could read a few lines of the song, and have the children listen for the answer. Have them once again ring the bell as soon as they hear the answer. Discuss the question and answer with the children, and then have the child take the piece of the Plan of Salvation, that was with the tool they chose, and have them try to find where it goes on the chart.

Have the children sit down, and invite another child up to the front to choose a tool.

Group Play

If you don’t want to do the buzzer/bell, simply invite all the children to listen to the song, and stand up when they know what song is being played. You could do the same thing for the question. By involving all the children, you will have them all listening for the answer.

    Thank you!!!!!! You got my motivation and ideas flowing.
    I’m taking a combination of ideas from this website and a printable from another, but putting my own twist on it. I will explain how important it is to follow a plan to build a house as suggested here.

    I will also explain how it is important to follow the instructions for building certain toys. You could use a small lego set, but I’m using Snap Circuts. We will build it in sharing time. Each piece of the toy to be built will have a picture attached to it which will be a part of the plan of salvation. I got the printouts here:

    As I call a child up to build a piece, we will discuss the part of the plan of salvation it is attached to and fasten the paper to the board for a visual. When the project is completed, we will have the toy to show how following the directions will get the desired results, then further discuss the importance of following God’s plan.
    I hope it works!!! Sometimes it is hard to know what will keep their interest and get them thinking. Thanks, again. You are a lifesaver.

    I am a little confused on which tools go with the plans. I think where goes with premortal life, who goes with birth, why goes with mortal life and the other why goes with spirit world and death, finally what goes with ressurection, final judgement and the three degrees. Am I correct or got some wrong?? I love the idea, thank you so much. Like everyone I loved the idea of singing and learning through songs but was confused on how to teach it.
