Sharing Time Ideas from the 2016 Outline
Introduce the doctrine: Help the children memorize the following sentence from Alma 13:28: “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and call on his holy name, and watch and pray continually.” Discuss what the scripture teaches about how and when we should pray.
Encourage understanding: Help the children understand that we can pray to Heavenly Father silently in our hearts anytime, anywhere and that we should thank Him for our blessings and ask Him for help. Write the following scripture references on the board: 3 Nephi 18:19; 3 Nephi 19:6–8; 3 Nephi 18:15. Also write the words how and when on the board. Invite the children to look up each scripture and discuss what it teaches us about how or when we should pray. Tell about Alma and Amulek teaching the Zoramites how to pray (see Alma 31; 34:17–27; see also Primary 4, lesson 21). You may want to ask a few children to act out the story as you tell it.
Encourage application: Invite several children to share how they feel when they pray. Ask the children to suggest some Primary songs that teach about prayer. Sing a few of the songs, and invite the children to suggest simple actions to replace one or two words in each song. For example, instead of singing the words “pray” or “prayer,” they could fold their arms.
Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas
For this week’s Sharing Time Idea I am using a Sharing Time idea that I used last year. The Sharing Time idea that I taught was about service, but I loved the clock idea, and thought you could incorporate it into this week’s lesson. It also involves a punch-a-box, which is always a favorite of the children. Enjoy!
Prayer Punch Sharing Time Idea
Before Sharing Time you will need to create a clock punch-a-box (like pictured above). Instead of repeating myself, I am going to direct you to the other Sharing Time post
where I showed you how I made it, HERE!
As you can see, each cup is labeled with a number 1-12, to represent the numbers on a clock.
For your clock you will also need 12 stories, scenarios, questions, scriptures, or quotes about prayer. Try to have the scenario or story match the hour on the clock. Type up your scenarios, scriptures, etc. onto pieces of paper and then place those inside of each of the cups. Follow the directions by placing the tissue paper on top, and the number and hands onto the clock (link for clock hands and numbers, below).
TO BEGIN YOUR LESSON
Help the children memorize the following sentence from Alma 13:28

Discuss what the scripture teaches about how and when we should pray.
Explain to the children that our Heavenly Father wants us to pray to him often: anytime & anywhere. Share a short story in the friend, a scripture or a quote about praying anytime and anywhere.
Our Heavenly Father doesn’t care if we pray to Him at 9:00 in the morning or at 9:00 at night. No matter when we pray He always hears our prayers.
Show the children the Prayer Punch clock, and explain that this is a clock, and like a clock there are different numbers to represent the different hours of the day. Explain that inside each of the cups is a slip of paper with a question or story or scripture that will help them learn about prayer. Tell the children that you are going to invite someone up to the front and have them ‘punch’ to retrieve the question/scenario.
Prayer Punch Scenario Idea:
“You are at a slumber party. Your friends begin watching a movie that you know you shouldn’t be watching. Could you pray to Heavenly Father? What would you pray for?”
For a time during the day you could share an experience that happens at school.
Have a scenario of a child taking a test and ask ‘Could you pray to Heavenly Father? What would you pray for?’
You could also include the scriptures from the outline, and have the child listen for the ‘How’ and ‘When’. You could read the scripture aloud, and then ask the child(ren), ‘How did that person pray?’ or ‘When did that person pray?’.
Continue having children come up and punch a time until all the hours have been punch or time runs out. Remind the children that our Heavenly Father will always hear our prayers no matter where we are or what time it is. Bear your testimony of the power of prayer.
To close, invite several children to share how they feel when they pray. You could even invite a few children to share a time when they prayed and their prayer was answered.
