As you may know by now, next year’s LDS Primary theme is “Choose the Right”. I am not currently serving in a Primary Presidency (I was released a month or so ago), but I know that Primary Presidencies are always looking for fun and inexpensive LDS Primary Birthday Gift ideas for the Primary kiddos. As I was thinking of ideas and trying to tie in the theme I had a thought of letting the children ‘choose’ their own prize! After some thinking I came up with ‘Choose the Right’ Birthday scratch cards! They’re easy to make AND I have some printables that I am sharing today to help you create your very own!
As you can see in the picture above, I have a cute gum tag as well as my Choose the Right Birthday Scratch Card. I thought it would be fun to give the children gum or some other ‘chewy’ treat and a scratch card. Just put a few pieces of gum into a clear baggie tie it and attach this cute tag, easy peasy!
I decided to leave the bottom blank, but I left space for you to write in your own little message. 🙂 Have the children ‘scratch’ their cards either during opening exercises, so all the other children can see what their prize is OR have them wait until the end of Primary.
Some of the prizes that could be: pencils, bracelets (have you seen those rubber ones with ‘Choose the Right’?), bookmarks, Bishop Treat, or something else.
Choose the Right Birthday Scratch Card
The gum tag is pretty self-explanatory, so let’s talk about those cute ‘scratch’ cards. I have seen them all over Pinterest, and LOVE them! I was surprised at how easy they are to make…2 simple ingredients! Really!
Well, I guess the supplies is more than 2 things, but to make the ‘scratch’ paint you only need 2 things.
First, you will need to print out my ‘Choose the Right Scratch Cards’ (link below) onto cardstock. I left the shield emblems blank on the actual printable because everyone’s prizes will be different. But just write in the prizes with a pen, and you’re good to go. Make sure to mix it up, so the prizes aren’t in the same places all the time.
Grab a white crayon and color over ALL of the prize spaces.
Color each of those cute little shields…then brush off those little bits of crayon shavings, because you don’t want those sticking around. 🙂
Now for the ‘scratch’ paint. For this you will mix 1 part of liquid dish soap and 2 parts acrylic paint (just your every day craft paint). I think a metallic silver paint would look AWESOME, but I didn’t have any laying around, so I used yellow.
Mix the soap and paint together and then paint over each of the shields. You will have to paint 2-3 coats to make sure it is covered, and so the children can’t see the words underneath.
You can create a stencil or just paint it on by hand. I did the first one with a stencil and the rest of them by hand.
Let the solution dry completely. Then cut into cards and put them in your Primary closet! Be sure to have some pennies in there as well. 😉
As I was typing up my post I wanted to double check the amounts of the ‘scratch solution’, but as I was searching around I found another way that you could make your ‘scratch cards’, and I’m thinking if you’re going to do this for Primary…I might do it this new way.
I found a great tutorial on Oopsey Daisy, HERE, where she uses contact paper. You get a big sheet and paint the entire sheet with your scratch solution. THEN you cut out the shields and then place them on the cards. I think it would go quite a bit faster this way, and it would look a little nicer. I am going to give this way a try and see which I like better.
Do you like my 2017 Choose the Right LDS Primary Birthday Gift idea? I know I would have loved these as a kid!
As promised, I have printables for you to create your very own ‘birthday scratch cards’. I have 2 different scratch cards to choose from and my ‘Chews the Right’ gum tags. Just use the link below to download and print.
I hope you enjoy my LDS Primary Birthday Gift ideas, and use them in your Primary. I would love to hear if you do, so leave me a comment.
Thanks so much for stopping by. Have a wonderful day!
