Sharing Time Ideas from the 2016 Outline

Encourage understanding: Write the following sentence on the board: “I can be a missionary now by ______.” Invite the children to think of things they can do to be a missionary now. Have them share their ideas with someone sitting next to them. Invite several children to write their responses on the board.

Encourage understanding: Invite an older child to share the story of the First Vision, and invite another child to share his or her feelings about the Book of Mormon. (Ask the children ahead of time so they have plenty of time to prepare.) Encourage all of the children to share the story of the First Vision or their feelings about the Book of Mormon with their families.

Encourage application: Ask the children to think of an action that shows how we can be missionaries and live the gospel now. Choose a child to come to the front of the room and share his or her action with the rest of the Primary. Invite the children to do the action as they sing “Do As I’m Doing” (CS, 276). Repeat with other children as time allows.


Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas

For this week’s Sharing Time idea, I thought it would be fun to ‘build a missionary’. But instead of using picture or cut-out pieces, why not have one of the children help you out. You could even invite one boy and one girl up, so you have an Elder and a Sister Missionary! Keep on reading to hear all about my idea.

September 2016 Sharing Time Idea

Before Primary you will need to gather several items that Missionaries use while serving a mission. Some of the items could include: Suit, Dress, White Shirt, Shoes, Scriptures, Name Tag, Comb/Brush, Preach My Gospel, etc.

Number pieces of paper (I would cut them into smallish squares or circles) and then tape or pin a number piece to each item. For this idea you will also need 1-2 foam dicelike THESE on Amazon. If you have more than 6 items you will need 2 dice, but if you only use 6 items then you can get away with one. You could also throw some trick things in there. These items could be things that Missionaries don’t use: video games, movies, etc.

Begin your Sharing Time by inviting the pianist to play the song, “I Hope They Call Me on a Mission”. Invite the children to listen quietly to see if they can guess what song is being played. Once they know what the song is have them stand up, raise their hand, or do a thumbs up.

Invite a child to stand up and share what song it is. Then show the children the statement: I Can Be a Missionary Now By…. You can have this typed onto a piece of paper or write it on a chalkboard. Explain to the children that today you are going to discuss how we can be missionaries, and to do that, we are going to ‘build a missionary’.

If I were doing this Sharing Time, I would probably invite 1 boy and 1 girl up to the front. Beside each of them (on a table or on the floor), have the missionary objects. Explain to the children that someone is going to roll the dice, and whatever number it lands on that is the item that they will have to hold or put on.


‘Missionary Now ‘Tags

In addition to having missionary items with numbers on them, you could also have missionary tags (paper of course) with numbers on them. You will need the same amount of tags as you have ‘missionary items’. On the back have ways we can be a missionary now, and then post them onto a bulletin board or foam board. Let’s say a child rolls a number 6, have the one child find their ‘missionary item,’ and then have the chid that rolled the dice find the missionary tag with the number 6 on it. Have them flip it over and read aloud what it says. Then discuss it with the whole primary.

To go along with the outline, you could have the child that flipped over the name tag act out the word on the back of the tag. I think the children would like acting out the word. I went ahead and created some missionary tags for you to use. The tags I created say, “I Can Be a Missionary Now” (link below). I have included a sheet of blank tags, and then tags with numbers 1-12 in the top corner.

Continue rolling the dice and flipping over name tags until time runs out or until you have built your Missionary!

First Vision

To end your Sharing Time share the story of the First Vision, and invite a child to share his or her feelings about the Book of Mormon. Encourage all of the children to share the story of the First Vision or their feelings about the Book of Mormon with their families, and encourage them to be a missionary.
