Because of General Conference there are only 3 Sundays left in April, but 4 Sharing Time Ideas in the outline. For this week’s Sharing Time I shared an idea that you could use to combine weeks 2 & 3.
Week 2 Sharing Time Idea from the Outline
“Heavenly Father & Jesus Christ Appeared to Joseph Smith”
IDENTIFY THE DOCTRINE (seeing a picture): Cover a picture of the First Vision with several smaller pieces of paper. Invite children to remove the pieces of paper one at a time. Ask the children to quietly raise their hands when they know what the picture is. After all the pieces of paper have been removed, ask the children to tell you what is happening in the picture.
ENCOURANGE UNDERSTANDING (reading scriptures): Show the children where in the scriptures we can read Joseph Smith’s description of his experience in the Sacred Grove (Joseph Smith—History 1:14–19). Read or ask some children to read several verses that describe what happened. You may want to ask younger children to do simple actions, such as standing and stretching their arms up like trees or folding their arms as if they are praying. Ask the children how they might have felt if they could have watched Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ appear and talk to Joseph Smith. Discuss the importance of this event.
ENCOURAGE APPLICATION (sharing testimonies): Have the children sing “The Sacred Grove” (CS, 87). Then bear your testimony that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph Smith. Invite a few children to share
Week 3 Sharing Time Idea from the Outline
“Priesthood Authority was Restored by Heavenly Messengers”
ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING (singing a song): Ask the children how they might announce something very important. Explain that long ago trumpets would be played when something important was announced. Ask the children to close their eyes and imagine that they hear trumpets as the pianist plays “The Priesthood Is Restored” (CS, 89). Ask the children to sing the song and discover what important message this song is announcing. Ask a few children to explain what the song means.
ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING (listening to guest speakers): Show the children pictures of the restoration of the Aaronic Priesthood and the restoration of the Melchizedek Priesthood. Invite an Aaronic Priesthood holder to briefly share the story of the restoration of the Aaronic Priesthood (see D&C 13; Joseph Smith—History 1:68–72). Then invite a Melchizedek Priesthood holder to tell the children about the restoration of the Melchizedek Priesthood (see D&C 27:12–13; Joseph Smith—History 1:72). Show the pictures again, and ask the children to name the people in the pictures.
ENCOURAGE APPLICATION (sharing testimonies): Have each class write on a piece of paper one thing that we have today because the Aaronic
Priesthood was restored (for example, baptism and the sacrament) and one thing we have because the Melchizedek Priesthood was restored (for example, confirmation and blessings for the sick). Ask some of the children to share what they wrote. Express your gratitude for the blessings that come from our Heavenly Father because of the restoration of the priesthood.
Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas
Week 2 Part:
First Vision Video: I have seen quite a few people on Sugardoodle (comments) that will be showing a Mormon Message or video about the First Vision. Great idea!
Invite Joseph Smith to Primary: Invite someone from the Bishopric or a Father of one of the children to act like Joseph Smith. Have him come in and share his experience. Have him show pictures and recite some scripture verses.
Week 3 Part:
Then to smoothly go into Week 3, you can have your ‘Joseph’ talk a little bit about the restoration of the Priesthood. Have him show pictures as he tells the children of his experiences. You could also invite ‘Oliver Cowdery’ to come in and join ‘Joseph’.
‘Priesthood Punch’ Activity:
Now for a fun activity to reinforce what the children just heard!
Remember the ‘Priesthood Punch’ from last year from Luanne Johnson?
After you have discussed the First Vision and the restoration of the Priesthood play Priesthood Punch to further discuss the priesthood.
Here is a short explanation of ‘Priesthood Punch’:
First a picture or two…
Here’s a picture of a Punch-a-Box from
Shannon Makes Stuff.

LuAnne saw the Punch-a-Box on pinterest and decided to use it for her sharing time. Here is what LuAnne shared:
“I will have 10 questions for my game. The 10 questions will go into 10 bowls (she used bowls for her punch-a-box). I am writing the word P-R-I-E-S-T-H-O-O-D onto the paper covering the bowls, one letter per bowl.
Then one at a time, a child will come up and get to put on a child size boxing glove (how cute! Love it). Then they will punch into the tissue paper taped over the bowl and pull out their question and read it out loud. Then the children are given the chance to answer, or get help from the rest of the primary, until we all have a great understanding of what the Priesthood is and the blessings that come from the Priesthood.”
Doesn’t that sound fun? Punch-A-Box is always a hit.
Have several different questions about the restoration of the Priesthood in the boxes or place some scripture references in there and read what the scriptures say about the restoration of the Priesthood. You could even use the idea from the outline and have a question ask:
· Name one thing that we have today because of the Aaronic Priesthood.
· Name one thing that we have today because of the Melchizedek Priesthood.
Just make sure ‘Joseph’ discusses that in his little speech. 🙂
I hope you like the ideas I have shared today. If you don’t want to combine the 2 weeks then just split the 2 ideas up.
Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful week & a great Sharing Time!
