Sharing Time Ideas from the 2016 Outline
Introduce the doctrine: Sing “Do As I’m Doing” (CS,276), and ask the children to follow you as you do several simple actions, such as clapping your hands, stretching your arms above your head, or marching in place. Ask the children to name some things they have learned by following someone’s example (for example, how to make a bed or play a game). Write on the board “Jesus Christ is the Perfect Example For Me.” Testify that Christ was the only person who has lived on the earth who has set the perfect example for us to follow. Have the children read the sentence together.
Encourage application: Display some pictures of Jesus loving and serving others. Write “Jesus loved everyone” and “Jesus served others” on the board. Draw a heart and a hand beneath these phrases. Tell the children that we should follow Jesus’s example by loving and serving others. Give each child a piece of paper and have them draw a heart or trace their hand. Then invite them to write or draw something they can do to follow Jesus’s example. Have the children share their ideas with the Primary and place their papers next to the pictures of Jesus. Sing “I’m Trying to Be like Jesus” (CS,78–79).
Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas
This week’s Sharing Time idea given in the outline is such a great idea. Here are some ideas that you can use to add a little something else to your Sharing Time: Jesus Christ is the Perfect Example for Me. Enjoy!
The children will love the “Do As I’m Doing” activity, so I would begin with that. For the next activity, have a picture of Christ (I LOVE the one pictured above) and have several small pieces of paper covering the picture. You could have the pieces cut into puzzle pieces or just have square or circle pieces covering the picture.
For Sr. Primary: you could have each of the words from the phrase, “Jesus Christ is the Perfect Example For Me” on the back of each piece of paper (6-8 pieces of paper).
Ask the children if they have learned anything by following someone’s example. Have the children raise their hand if they would like to share something, and then have them come to the front and remove a piece of paper from the picture. As they share different things they have learned, they will slowly uncover the picture of Christ.
If you decide to do the word scramble with the Sr. Primary, have them unscramble the words on the back of each piece of paper to create the correct phrase.
Once the picture is uncovered and the phrase is unscrambled, have everyone repeat the phrase together. For Jr. primary, you could just write the phrase on the board or have it typed onto a piece of paper above the picture. 🙂 Testify that Christ was the only person who has lived on the earth who has set the perfect example for us to follow. Have the children read the sentence together.
Jesus Christ is the Perfect Example For Me
For the next activity, the children will be reviewing some scripture stories where Jesus served and loved others. Here is what you will need for this activity:
•Gospel Art Kit Pictures: examples- GAK 213 (Christ Healing a Blind Man); GAK 215 (Jesus Blessing Jabirus’s Daughter); GAK 216 or 322 (Christ and the Children); GAK 221 (The Ten Lepers); Jesus Feeding the 5,000 (you should be able to find this in a primary manual.
•Several objects that have to do with the GAK Pictures: examples: Dirt/mud- 213 (Christ Healing a Blind Man); Picture of children- 216/322 (Christ and the Children); Number 10 or 10 men- 221 (The Ten Lepers), etc.
•Scripture References: GAK 213 (John 9:1-17); GAK 215 (Matthew 9:18-19, 23-25); GAK 322 (Nephi 17:21-24); Jesus Feeding the 5,000 (John 6:5-14); 221 (Luke 17:11-19)
How to Play
Explain to the children that Jesus loved everyone and served everyone. Explain to the children that Jesus, wearing shoes like these, went about doing good. Tell them that throughout Jesus’ life, he did many great things. Tell the children of His love for others. Today we are going to learn some of the stories/things that Jesus did.
Have the GAK pictures spread around the room or posted onto a bulletin/chalk board. Place your objects, that go along with the pictures, onto a table. Tell the children that you have some objects on the table, and these objects have to do with one of the pictures that you see posted around the room/on the chalkboard. Either split the primary children into groups and give each group one of the objects, or take turns choosing a child to come up and pick one of the objects.
Have the child(ren) look at the object, and then show them the scripture reference. If you do this in groups, have each group read the scripture and then pick the picture that goes with their scripture and object. If you do this by choosing one child at a time, have them tell the other children what the object is and then give them the scripture reference. Have one child read the scripture (or a teacher) and have the children try to guess what picture it goes with.
Once the children have chosen the correct picture go over the story. Ask if anyone knows what part the object you used, plays in the story; i.e. – Why did I choose mud for the object for this story? Because that is what Jesus used to heal the blind man. Ask the children, ‘What is Jesus doing in this picture?’ ‘Is he doing good?’
Once you have matched all of the scriptures/objects with the correct picture have the children look at the Picture of Christ again and repeat the phrase, ‘Jesus Christ is the perfect example for me.’
You could conclude your Sharing Time with this activity from the outline: “Give each child a piece of paper and have them draw a heart or trace their hand. Then invite them to write or draw something they can do to follow Jesus’s example. Have the children share their ideas with the Primary and place their papers next to the pictures of Jesus.”
