Identify the doctrine (doing a scripture activity): Place pictures of Christ’s birth and death on opposite sides of the room. Tell the children that you will read some scriptures that are either about signs of Jesus’s birth or signs of His death. Ask the children to turn and face the picture that goes with the scriptures you read. (If your Primary is small, you may want to have the children walk to the pictures.) Read 3 Nephi 1:15, 19, 21; 8:20, 22–23. Discuss how Jesus Christ brought light to the world. Ask the children to cover their eyes and imagine some challenges they might face if they had to live with no light. Compare these challenges to those we would face if we did not have the gospel of Jesus Christ. Read John 8:12, and invite the children to listen for what we must do to not walk in darkness.
Encourage understanding (playing a guessing game):Explain that many symbols help us remember that Jesus is the light of the world; some of the symbols are used at Christmas. Put some of these symbols (such as candles, a paper star, or lights) in a bag. Ask a child to reach into the bag, feel one of the objects without looking at it, guess what it is, and then show it to the other children. Ask the child to share something Jesus Christ did to bring light to our lives. Repeat with the other objects.
Encourage application (drawing a picture): Give each child a paper sun. Have them write or draw a picture of one way they will follow the light of Jesus Christ. Encourage them to share their papers with their families.
Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas
I have been trying all week to get this idea posted. I’m excited to finally have a minute to sit down and share it with you. I hope you enjoy it and are able to use it for your lesson this week.
My idea goes right along with the Encourage Understanding section from the outline. Since it is the Sunday before Christmas I thought it would be a great time to teach the children the symbols and their meanings. I decided to use the same type of idea as my “Spirit of Christmas” Ward Party program, but simplified it so you could use it for Primary. I have included printables and an outline that you could use to help create a great Sharing Time.
As they reveal each of the symbols the children will be decorating a Christmas tree and learn about its meaning. I have included an outline and printables to make prep a lot easier.
Symbols of Christmas Sharing Time Idea
First, print and cut the Christmas tree and Symbols printables. There are 6 sheets total: 2 sheets of symbol ornaments, and 4 sheets for the tree tree (you will piece this together to create a poster). I was able to find the cutest sugar cookie Christmas graphics for this week’s lesson from Creating For Creative. When I saw them I knew I had to use them for this lesson.
You could do this activity a few different ways, here are a few that I thought of.
For your lesson you will be discussing 5 different symbols: Tree, Candy Cane, Star, Lights, and Gifts. You will need 5 boxes or gift bags, one for each symbol. Once you have the ornaments cut out, place them inside your box/bag. There are 4-5 of each ornament/symbol, I thought it would help to have several children place an ornament on the tree instead of just one.
If you would like to teach about the symbols in a specific order, place a number on each box/bag. For your lesson you could hide the gifts around the room and have the children search for the gift (in the order they’re numbered). As they find each one, have the children open the gift and reveal the symbol to the children. You could ask the children what they might think it represents, and then share the picture, scripture, and message (this is included in the outline I have provided).
You could also play “hot potato” with the gifts. Hand a child the first gift and have them pass it to the next child until the music stops. When the music stops, invite the child holding the gift to come to the front and open it. Have the child show everyone what the ornament/symbol is and then ask the children what they might think it represents. Share the picture (Gospel Art Kit), scripture, and message (this is included in the outline I have provided).
This idea works if you don’t care what order the gifts are opened. You will still need to have each gift labeled, but the children will roll a die to determine which gift to open. You could also use the “Decide Now” spinner app (my amazing friend talked about it, HERE) and have them spin to determine which gift to open, they always enjoy using the spinner app. 🙂
Symbol & Scripture Match
This one would be great for Sr. Primary because it’s a little more challenging. You will be placing the pictures (found in my lesson outline) on a bulletin board or chalkboard. You can then choose one of the above ideas to determine which gift to open. Once the gift is opened and the symbol has been revealed, ask if the child knows what picture it would go with. They might not now just from the symbol, so give them one more clue, a scripture (I have included a few you can use). Have the children listen for clues as you read the scripture aloud, and then have the child choose the picture that goes with the symbol/ornament.
After they have found the correct picture, read the message/description about the symbol and have the children place the ornaments on the tree.
