Sharing Time Idea from the 2017 Outline
Encourage understanding (reading scriptures, coloring, and using puppets): Read with the children the following accounts of how Jesus’s disciples chose the right: Luke 10:38–42 (Mary); Matthew 4:18–20 (Peter and Andrew); Acts 9:1–9, 17–20 (Paul). Discuss some of the blessings these people received for choosing the right. Draw some simple figures for each child (or use the scripture figures in “Funstuf,” Friend, Jan. 2006, 35; and “Funstuf,” Friend, Feb. 2006, 31). Let the children color the drawings, cut them out, and make them into stick puppets or paper sack puppets. Invite the children to use their puppets to retell one of the stories. For example: “My name is Paul. I used to persecute people who followed Jesus. I saw a vision of Jesus. Jesus asked me to stop persecuting Him. I chose to follow Jesus and was a missionary for the rest of my life.”
Encourage application (reviewing scripture stories):Invite the children to use their puppets to retell the scripture stories to their families at home. Encourage them to share with family members how the individuals in the stories chose the right and how they were blessed. Ask the children how they can choose the right during the next week.
Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas
I am excited to share my idea for this week! As always, this idea goes right along with the February Sharing Time idea in the outline, but with a fun twist. When I was trying to figure out what idea to share I thought of my ‘go-to’ Punch-A-Box idea, but then I remembered a similar activity that we actually did for our Ward’s Trunk or Treat. This Sharing Time idea will definitely be a hit. I hope you enjoy this week’s idea, and use it for your lesson.
Before Primary You Will Need:
9 Plastic Cups
‘Who Am I’ Choose the Right February Sharing Time Game
Alright, you are going to be cutting holes into your foam board, just like a regular punch-a-box, but I decided that I wanted mine in the shape of a CTR shield. So, first I went ahead and created a shield template using my tissue paper (you will use this later as well), and then drew an outline on the back of my foam board. You will be covering the holes with tissue paper and the poster-board, so cut out a shield from the poster-board.
I then placed my 9 plastic cups inside the shield. Grab a pencil and trace around the mouth of the cups. From there, grab an X-acto Knife (or a regular knife), and start cutting out the holes (be sure to cut a little inside the circle so that the hole isn’t larger than the mouth of the cups.
Now that you have all of the holes cut out, go ahead and place your tissue paper shield over the holes (on the front side of your foam board). Use a glue stick to hold the tissue paper, and be sure to glue in between the holes as well as on the outside edge of the shield. Then do the same with the poster-board shield by placing it on top of the tissue paper and gluing.
Your foam board will look something like this. Now, you are going to flip your foam board so that the front is faced down, and using your knife make a slit into the poster-board/tissue paper in each hole.
Take your scissors, and cut from the center of the circle into wedge pieces (or pie sliced pieces, pictured above). By cutting your poster-board this way it will allow the children to easily slip their hands in and out of the holes.
Alright! You’ve got the holes covered cut, now let’s move onto the clues and cups.
I have provided clue strips for you to use. There are 3 clues per person (I just used the people mentioned in the outline), so 9 strips total. I used a different color for each person to help figuring out who it is a little easier. Print out the clue strips and cut them out. Then place them inside 9 plastic cups.
Once each cup has a clue inside, attach the cups to the back of your foam board. You can do this by using hot glue or even using some strong tape. And that’s it! Now let’s talk about how to play!
How To Play:
The children are going to be taking turns sticking their hands into the CTR shield to retrieve a clue. They will be reading clues trying to guess which picture it belongs to. Once they have figured out ‘Who I Am’ you can tell the children the story, read the scriptures, or show them a short Scripture Video.
At the front of the room, have your ‘Who Am I’ game. Have your 3 Gospel Art Kit pictures attached to a bulletin board, chalkboard, or other foam board.
Invite a child up to the front to retrieve the first clue. Have them read the clue aloud, and then have them guess which picture they think it belongs to. Have them go and place the clue above/under the picture they think.
Then invite another child up, and have them do the same. Continue until all the clues have been pulled out. You will probably need to re-arrange some clues until all are under the appropriate picture.
Tell the children about each person, and how they were blessed for choosing the right. I know there are some great Scripture videos for some of these scripture stories OR you could invite someone to dress up like one of the people and have them come in and share how they were blessed.
