Sharing Time Idea from the 2016 Outline
Encourage understanding: Invite a returned missionary to come to Primary and tell the children about some of the blessings he or she received from doing missionary work. Invite others (recent converts, children, or families) to share a missionary experience they have had or an example of how missionary work has blessed their lives. Invite the children to sing “We’ll Bring the World His Truth” (CS, 172–73) to the guests.
Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas
This week’s idea is very simple, but is such a great lesson. I thought it would be fun to invite several people in to talk about their missions, but add a fun ‘Guess Who’ twist in there. I hope you enjoy this week’s idea.
To begin your sharing time bring in a big plate of cookies or treats and begin eating one. Start really enjoying your treat by loudly saying ‘Mmmmm…’ or ‘This is the best cookie’, something along those lines. Act like you don’t notice the children and then after you have finished your treat look at the children and say, ‘Oh, you don’t want one of these, right? OK, then I’ll keep on eating’.
The children will probably be a little disappointed and say a few things. When that happens, stop eating and ask the children if they’d like you to share your treats.
Ask the children if they had something amazing/wonderful wouldn’t they want to share it with others? You can then explain that everyone in the room has something wonderful, something so special that we should want to share it with everyone we know. Does anyone know what it is?
It is the Gospel!
We are blessed to have the gospel in our lives, and we should want to share it with others, but how can we do that? By missionary work.
GUESS THAT MISSIONARY!
I thought it would be fun to play a little guessing game. For this you will need several adults to come in and help out. You could play this several different ways, I’m going to share a couple with you. The children will be asking your ‘missionaries’ questions to guess who they are. I have created some cute ‘Missionary Question Slips’ (link below) that you could hand out and have the children write down questions OR you could write down your own questions ahead of time.
Explain to the children that ‘Missionary work blesses everyone’. Then tell the children that today we have some special guests coming in to help with the lesson.
IDEA #1: At the front of the room have a large rolling chalkboard or you can hang a sheet up. Your missionary helpers will be standing behind this so the children can’t see them. You can have all of the helpers come in and stand behind the board OR have them come in one at a time. Using the question slips, invite a child up to the front to ask a question. Some of the questions could include:
Where did you serve your mission?
What language did you speak?
Do missionaries have to wear church clothes (suit/dresses) all the time?
Do missionaries carry their scriptures with them everywhere?
Do missionaries have to cook their own meals?
The last question could be:
How has missionary work blessed your life or those you taught?
After the ‘helper’ has answered a few questions, ask the children if anyone knows who this missionary is. Then have the missionary come out. You could then have them bear their testimony of missionary work.
IDEA #2: I also thought it would be fun to have a ‘panel’ of missionaries. Before Primary, write down clues about each of your missionary helpers. You don’t need too many, maybe 4-5 clues for each person. Have the clues written or typed onto pieces of paper and then place each set of clues in an envelope. You might also want to have number signs for each of your missionary helpers (sheets of paper with #1, #2, #3, etc. Have one for each helper).
To begin, invite your missionary helpers in one at a time and introduce them to the children. Hand the helper their number sign and invite them to take a seat. Then invite the next person in and introduce them and hand them their number sign. Continue until all of your missionary helpers have come in and sat down.
Have your clue envelopes posted on a board or hidden under chairs. Invite a child to come to the front and pick an envelop OR have them look under their chairs and have them bring the envelopes up one at a time. Open the first envelope and begin reading the first clue.
After all the clues have been read, ask if anyone knows which ‘Missionary’ it is.
Once they have guessed which person it is, invite the person to stand and share how Missionary Work has blessed their life and share an experience if they’d like.
Continue by reading the next set of clues and have the children guess who it is. For the last two, you could read both sets of clues and have the children guess which belongs to which. That way you aren’t left with just one person. 🙂
