IDENTIFY THE DOCTRINE(unscrambling words): Give each class an envelope containing nine pieces of paper with one of the following words written on each: The Sabbath is a day of rest and worship. ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING(discussing scriptures): Write the following scripture references on the board: Exodus 20:8–11; Luke 23:56; Mosiah 18:23; Doctrine and Covenants 68:29. Explain that Heavenly Father created the world in six days (hold up six fingers and wiggle them), but on the seventh day He rested (hold up seven fingers and hold them still), and all through time He has commanded His children to rest on the seventh, or Sabbath, day and keep it holy. Invite four children to read the scriptures on the board. Ask the children to listen and discover what principle is being taught. Point out that the scriptures were all written at different times in the history of the world but they all teach the same principle. Explain that keeping the Sabbath day holy means doing things that will bring us closer to Heavenly Father.
ENCOURAGE APPLICATION(playing a game): Have the children count off the days of the week one by one, starting with Monday. Ask the child who says “Sunday” to suggest an appropriate activity for the Sabbath. Repeat as time allows.
Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas
Fill In The Blank (Identify the Doctrine):
On the board have this statement written:
The ________ is a _____ of ______ and ________.
Underneath the sentence have 4 columns of possible words (4-5 words)that could fit in each blank. The first column will be for the first word, the second column for the second word and so on.
Invite a child up and have them choose a word from the first column that they think might fit. Then invite a second child up to the front and have them pick a word from the second column and so on. Once all the words have been chosen read the sentence aloud and ask the children if they think that is correct.
If it is not correct you could tell the children which words are in the correct space and then have them try again on the wrong spaces.
When the sentence is correct have everyone repeat it together. Discuss the meaning of “rest” and “worship.”
Before Primary write these scriptures references onto pieces of paper:
Tape each of the 4 pieces of paper underneath 4 primary chairs.
Ask the children if they know how many days it took Heavenly Father to create the world. Explain that Heavenly Father created the world in six days, but on the seventh day He rested.
All through time He has commanded His children to rest on the seventh, or Sabbath, day and keep it holy. Tell the children that you have hidden four scriptures underneath 4 chairs. Have the children look under their chairs and if they have a piece of paper have them bring the paper and their scriptures (if they have them) up to the front of the room.
Tell the children that we are going to read 4 scriptures, and you would like them to count how many times they hear the word “Sabbath”.
Invite the first child to read their scripture aloud, then continue until all scriptures have been read aloud.
After all scriptures have been read ask the children how many times they heard the word “Sabbath”. Then ask them if they know what principle was being taught in the scriptures that were read. Point out that the scriptures were all written at different times in the history of the world but they all teach the same principle. Explain that keeping the Sabbath day holy means doing things that will bring us closer to Heavenly Father.
Sharing Time Activity
The activity I am sharing today is actually one that I have shared before, but it’s a great idea that I found on Sugardoodle, so I thought I’d share it again. 🙂 Enjoy!
For this activity you will be creating an Ice Cream Sundae. Each of the toppings will represent appropriate Sabbath activities. This is sure to be a HIT!
For this activity invite the Bishop in to help or ask one of the adults in Primary.
As you are getting everything ready for your ‘Sunday Sundae’ explain to the children that you they are going to be discussing appropriate activities that we could do on the Sabbath Day. In order for us to discuss these activities we are going to make a ‘Sunday Sundae’! Uncover the ice cream.
In the front of the Primary room on a table, have a large bowl or ice cream dish. Scoop up some ice cream and tell the children that this is the first thing for your special ‘Sunday Sundae’. On the table have several different toppings (chocolate syrup, sprinkles, cherries, whip cream, etc.). Show the children the toppings and tell them that these represent appropriate things that we can do on Sunday.
Invite a child up to the front of the room and have them pick a topping (but don’t let them put the topping on yet). Once they have picked their topping, have them share an appropriate activity for the Sabbath. Once they have shared an activity have them put their topping onto the ice cream. Then pick another child to come to the front or have the child pick someone to come to the front.
After a few toppings have been added, ask the Bishop to taste the Sundae.
Keep asking for ideas until your toppings have run out.
Then say, “Wow! It really looks like we have a great sundae. And if we choose to do things on Sunday that makes Heavenly Father happy, then we can have a great Sunday also.”
What if we choose to do something that we shouldn’t do on Sunday? What if we forget to buy something for our dinner and have to run to the store to buy it (drop a few coins into the sundae or any other ‘gross’ topping) Would that ruin your Sunday?
You could ask your Bishop to take a bite of his Sundae and let you know. haha
What if your soccer team was playing in an all-star tournament and you just couldn’t miss it? (sprinkle dirt and grass) Would that ruin your Sunday?
What if company was coming for dinner and you didn’t do your chores Saturday like you were supposed to…now you have to clean the bathroom before they come…Would that ruin your Sunday?
Ask your Bishop if he’d like to take a bite of his Sundae now.
Close with a story from The Friend or read a scripture to the children to help remind them that the Sabbath is a holy day.
Bear your testimony of the importance of keeping the Sabbath Day Holy. Explain that when we do things that aren’t appropriate on the Sabbath it ruins our Sunday and it isn’t as special or spiritual. Finish with a challenge to the children — don’t ruin your Sunday!
