Last week my husband and I studied President Uchtdorf’s talk: “A Summer With Great-Aunt Rose”.
What a great talk, and a great message. At the beginning of President Uchtdorf’s talk he said,
” I invite you to listen with the Spirit. The Holy Ghost will help you to find the message for you in this parable.”
Have you read this great talk? What message did you find? Here is what I found from this inspired talk.
BE GRATEFUL AND HAVE FAITH
In President Uchtdorf’s parable/story, he told of a young girl going to live with her Great-aunt for a summer. The young girl was not excited, and looked for a way out. But in the end, she went to stay with her aunt.
After a little while she realized that her Aunt Rose was one of the happiest people she’d met. She decided to ask why.
Aunt Rose was not always happy. In fact, there was a time in her life where she was very angry because her life was NOT turning out the way she’d hoped it would. So she was mad, and angry, and “an absolute monster to be around.”
But after a time of being angry at the world, Aunt Rose realized something…
“Faith,” Aunt Rose smiled. “I discovered faith. And faith led to hope. And faith and hope gave me confidence that one day everything would make sense, that because of the Savior, all the wrongs would be made right. After that, I saw that the path before me wasn’t as dreary and dusty as I had thought. I began to notice the bright blues, the verdant greens, and the fiery reds, and I decided I had a choice—I could hang my head and drag my feet on the dusty road of self-pity, or I could have a little faith, put on a bright dress, slip on my dancing shoes, and skip down the path of life, singing as I went.”
Are we like the ‘old’ Aunt Rose, or do you try your best to choose happiness? We will all go through hard times, but we are the ones that will have a choice. We can choose to let those trials tear us down, or we can choose for those trials to strengthen us and make us stronger. Here is another great quote from President Uchtdorf’s talk:
“There is enough that doesn’t go right in life, so anyone can work themselves into a puddle of pessimism and a mess of melancholy. But I know people who, even when things don’t work out, focus on the wonders and miracles of life. These folks are the happiest people I know.”
So, what choice will you make? Are you going to choose to work yourself into a ‘puddle of pessimism and a mess of melancholy’? Or will you choose to be happy?
I am choosing to be HAPPY!
As I was studying this talk, I had an idea that I thought would help me with my new goal. If I am going to choose to be happy, then I am going to have to realize all the good things in my life.
I have decided to keep a Gratitude Journal, to help me focus on the good things in my life. As I take a few minutes to write down all the things that I am grateful for, I will realize how blessed I am. I will forget the things that I don’t have or the things that aren’t going as planned. President Uchtdorf also said that as we stop focusing on ourselves and all the things going wrong in our lives, we will have a chance to begin thinking of others, and how we can help them.
Will you join me in my Gratitude Challenge? Will you choose happiness? If so, here’s what you can do!
1. Find a notebook or print out my Gratitude Journal sheets (below).
2. Take a few minutes every day to write down things in your life that you are grateful for.
3. Pray to your Heavenly Father & ask for help with your new challenge.
4. CHOOSE to be happy. Make the choice…don’t let the little things bring you down.
5. Write down quotes or scriptures on gratitude and happiness, and place them in places that you will see them often.
What are some things you could do to help you CHOOSE HAPPINESS?
I hope you enjoy today’s post. I know that as we choose happiness we will be blessed, and we will see all that is good in our lives. We will forget about the bad things going on, and little by little we can become just like Great-aunt Rose…one of the happiest people around!
I am so excited for this challenge, and I hope you are as well. I would love to hear what you plan to do, and any changes you might make to help you Choose Happiness!
Thanks so much for stopping by! Have a wonderful day!
