The Spirit of Christmas: A Ward Christmas Program

The Spirit of Christmas: A Ward Christmas Program

Today I am sharing a wonderful Christmas Program that you could use for your very own Ward Christmas Party this year. I had this idea on my old blog, but for some reason it didn’t transfer over when I moved to my new site.

My ‘Spirit of Christmas: a Ward Christmas Party’ idea has been one of my most popular posts. I know we’re not even into September yet, but I’ve already had people emailing me trying to find out where it is. So here it is! Enjoy!

Back in 2012 I was called as the 2nd counselor in Relief Society. Right after receiving my calling I was asked to put together the program for our Ward Christmas party. I was a little nervous because I had never planned anything like that. I got to work searching for ideas. I knew that I wanted something different…something to help us remember the real reason we celebrate Christmas. I came across an idea and let my mind run with it. I worked with another great sister in our Ward and we came up with a wonderful Christmas program.

The Christmas program that I came up with talks about all the symbols of Christmas. It includes speakers, musical numbers, and Mormon Messages. It is a very spiritual program that everyone is sure to enjoy.

Just a warning: When we did the program it ran a little longer than expected, but I had people tell me that it was the best Christmas party that they had attended. That made me feel a little better, aren’t we always our worst critics? I do have a link at the bottom of this post with a shortened version, if you’re interested.

Since I planned on having a program for our Ward activity, and that it might be a little longer than usual, I knew I had to come up with something to keep the children busy. I finally decided on a little craft type activity that they could do during the program. Since the speakers would be talking about the symbols of Christmas, first being the Tree, I decided to give each family/child their very own tree (made from cardstock) to decorate. Throughout the evening the children were able to decorate their trees as we talked about each symbol.

The Symbols included:

Christmas Tree

Candy Cane

Star

Bow

Red (ornament)

I found all of the symbols for each child’s tree at Michael’s craft store. I just found some small stickers for each symbol. I did end up buying ribbon and tying my own bow for the bow symbol, but I’m sure you could find bow stickers.

For the tree, I used green cardstock and cut a 3-D tree, using my Silhouette. But you could simply use a flat cardstock tree as well or even a Christmas tree printed onto paper.

Script Information & Links

.I have included the entire script for this special Christmas Program, below. It has all the speaking parts, titles to the songs we used, and the names of each Mormon Message we used. I even included how long each part, song, & video would be.

Here is a list and link to each of the songs included in the script:

.

Songs:

Angels We Have Heard on High: I don’t know exactly which arrangement was used for our program. You could use the one from the hymnal or find another online.
And His Name Shall Be Called Wonderful
Room In The Inn
While Shepherds Watched Their Flock: {Hymn 211}
If I Had Been in Bethlehem
Guard Him, Joseph
Mary’s Lullaby
His Endless Gift of Love

Videos:

And here is a link to one of the videos. All the videos are easy to find, just search LDS.org and you should find them. The only one that others have had a hard time finding is ‘The Good Shepherd’ so here is the link for that one: The Good Shepherd

Script Downloads

Are you ready to plan your own Spirit of Christmas ward activity? I created a Google Doc of my program. Just click the link below to view it. Since it is a shared Google Doc please do not edit the original file. Once you have clicked and opened the google doc, you will need to go to “File” and then click “Make a Copy”. Once you have made a copy you can edit in any way you’d like.

The second link is a shortened version that a wonderful sister, Amanda MacKay, emailed to me..

Thanks so much for visiting my blog. I am amazed at the number of people that have used my script. I hope the members of your ward enjoy it and are able to feel the Spirit. If you use my script and make changes to it, I would love to hear about them.

Thanks again for stopping by. Have a wonderful day!

This is FANTASTIC!! Exactly what I was looking for. My husband and I were just called to be in charge of the ward Christmas party and its ONE month away. So a BIG thank you!
Quick question: Did you do the program at the beginning or after dinner? And how long did your long version of the program go?

    1. Hi Elise! I’m so glad you like the program. It really was a great program. If I remember right, we had dinner before. I don’t think we waited until everyone finished eating to begin the program, though. After a certain amount of time we let everyone know that we would be beginning the program. They could continue eating if they felt like it.
As for the time frame…I think it was 45 mins-1 hour, I think. Hope this helps. Feel free to ask any other questions. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by, and for the comment.

        Hi,

I love this program and plan on using it. However I can’t find Mary’s lullaby? Do you know where we can find it?

        1. Hi Maria! Just click on the title (link) and it will direct you to the song. It is actually in the Children’s Songbook, just take a look in there and you should find it. ?

            Thank you! 🙂

The link for the shortened version is coming up as unavailable. Is it possible for you to email it to me? This is such a beautiful program and I was hoping to look at the shortened version and see if that will work with the time frame we have available.
    Thanks

  3. Vickie

    Hi,
I love this idea! I can only open the shortened version, so I don’t know about the videos. Can you email me more complete version, or help me download? Also, did the kids make their little trees as the symbols were presented?

    Thank you!

    1. I just sent over the files for you. Yes, the children made their trees as the symbols were presented/during the program. I thought it would help keep them busy. 🙂

  4. Mitzi

I also cannot open the complete version. It looks like a wonderful program! Could you send the files to me too? Thanks for sharing!!!

    1. Hi Mitzi! I just sent over the file for the complete script, and I uploaded the script again and changed the link (hopefully that fixes problems). Hope you like it! 🙂

    1. Hi Linda. Did you try downloading the Word file link that I have at the bottom of the post? 🙂 Let me know. If you have trouble I can email the file to you. Thanks!

  5. Julie

How long is the longer version vs. the shorter version? We’re doing a breakfast and only have an hour- hour & half tops.
    Thank you!!

    1. The longer version was about an hour, if I remember right. I’m not sure how long the shortened version ended up being because we didn’t do that on our ward. Hope this helps answer some questions. Thanks! ?

    1. Thank you for the updates, Terri! It’s been years since I shared this. ?

  6. Thank you for sharing this! I am trying to put something together for our ward Christmas party and this may be exactly what I need.

    1. Thank you, Michelle. When we did this it was such a special night. I really felt the Spirit, and think many others did too. 🙂 Good luck with all the planning.

  7. Shannon

Will you please email me the file, somehow it’s not downloading for me. Thank you!!

    1. I just sent it over, Shannon. I will never understand why it downloads for some people, and not for others. But I don’t mind emailing the files. 😉 Thanks so much!

  8. Robyn

Did you use a cut file from the silhouette store? If so which one? Did they stay together well?

    1. Hi Robyn! I did get it from the Silhouette store. I used the 3-D Christmas Tree from Lori Whitlock (link: https://www.silhouettedesignstore.com/view-shape/22548). I think they stayed together fine. I was kind of running around like crazy trying to keep everything in order, but if I remember right, they worked just fine. 🙂

  9. RaNae

This is terrific, perfect for Christmas Spiritual Ward Activity.

  10. Megan

The full file won’t download for me from dropbox either. Would you be able to email it to me? This is a wonderful program. Thank you for sharing it!

  11. Jill

    Hello,

I am unable to download the full files. Could you email it to me?
    Thank you so much.

  12. BreeAnn Torres

Love this! I could not get it to download and wondering if you could email it to me?

  13. DJ ONEAL

How did you decorate the tables for the Christma’s social?

    1. Hi DJ. I don’t remember what we did, sorry. I think the YW were in charge of the table decorations, and I can’t remember what they were.

Another question: I’m having trouble finding sheet music to “His endless gift of love.” Any help from anyone would be appreciated! Please!
