Sharing Time Ideas from the 2016 Outline
Introduce the doctrine: Before Primary, write the sixth article of faith on the board. Ask the children to close their eyes. Tell them that after Jesus Christ died, the people became wicked and His gospel and priesthood were taken from the earth. Explain that this was called the Apostasy, and the people were in spiritual darkness—like having their eyes closed spiritually—until Jesus restored His Church through Joseph Smith. Hold up a picture of the First Vision, and tell the children to open their eyes. Help the children memorize the sixth article of faith by having them read it out loud together. Erase several words, and repeat until all of the words have been erased and the children have memorized the article of faith.
Encourage understanding: Make wordstrips for each of the duties in the chart shown below. Write the titles of the offices on the board as shown, and leave a blank column in the middle to represent the duties. Divide the children into five groups, and give each group one of the “Duties” wordstrips. Invite each group to place their wordstrip in the correct place on the board. Point out that the restored Church has the same kinds of leaders as the Church when Jesus Christ was on the earth.
Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas
For this week’s idea I am sharing a great activity that you could use for the ‘Encourage Understanding’ portion. A few months ago, the Primary President in our ward did a Sharing Time ‘Hedbandz’ idea from Hatch Patch Creations. It was a great activity, and the children were so excited to play. I am using that same idea for a SR. Primary idea to help them learn about the different titles, offices, and duties of the primitive and restored church. I also have a great matching game option for JR. Primary. Enjoy!
For the ‘Introduce the Doctrine’ section, I thought you could turn off the lights instead of have the children close their eyes. If you have multiple light switches in your Primary room, you could ask adults to stand by the switch. As you tell the children about how the people became wicked after Jesus Christ died, have one of the adults flip off one of the switches. Then as you go on to tell the children a little bit more about the apostasy, have another adult turn off some more lights. By the end, all the lights will be off, and the room will be dark. His gospel and priesthood were taken from the earth. Explain that this period of time was called the Apostasy, and the people were in spiritual darkness—like having their eyes closed spiritually or being in a rom with no lights—until Jesus restored His Church through Joseph Smith. Have the adults turn on the lights and hold up a picture of the First Vision.
You could then continue by reciting the sixth article of faith with the children. You could also show a short clip of the First Vision.
For the next activity, I have 2 great activities you could choose from or choose to do both. The first idea would be great for SR Primary.
If you have never played Headbandz, the idea is to try to get a person to guess the word/person that they are wearing on their forehead. 🙂 If you’re like me, and don’t have the actual game, no problem. You can make your own headband at home using a regular old elastic headband!
What You Will Need:
• My Restoration Headbandz cards and clues (link below)
First, you will need to print out my Headbandz cards, and cut them out. You can print them onto normal paper or cardstock, if you’d like them a little more sturdier. Here’s a peek at what they look like.
•The images I used are church approved (found on LDS.org), and are the images they suggested for this week’s Sharing Time.
I included 2 sets of cards: restored gospel leaders and primitive church leaders. For the headbandz game, I was thinking of using only the restored church leader cards, since that is what the children would be most familiar with, but feel free to use either or both. 🙂
• You will also need a Headband. You can create one using an elastic headband, or use one from the actual game.
Like in the outline, you could have a chart drawn onto the chalkboard. You could have the chart completely blank, you could write in only the titles of the primitive church, or you could write in only the duties. Explain to the children that the restored Church has the same kinds of leaders as the Church when Jesus Christ was on the earth, and that you are going to discuss that today by playing a fun game.
Invite a child up to the front and have them face the other Primary children. Place the headband on their head, and then slip in one of the ‘leader cards’. If you’d like to include the other children, you could invite 2-3 children up to the front to read the clues, OR you could read them.
Read clue #1 first and see if the child knows who the leader is. If they don’t, move on to clue #2, and so forth.
I have included a clue sheet that you could use. The clues are for the restored leaders, so if you are using the primitive church leader cards, you will need to write up a few clues for those. There’s at least 2 clues for each leader, but some have a third ‘easy’ clue.
The child wearing the headband will need to listen to the clues, and try to guess which leader he/she has. Once they have guessed correctly, discuss the duties and the different titles from the primitive church and the restored church. If you have the chart, fill it in while you are discussing it. Continue until all the leaders have been discussed.
The headbandz game might be a little too old for JR. Primary, so I thought you could play a matching game using the same cards. Just print out my cards and cut them out. Have the children flip over 2 cards and try to match the primitive leader to the restored gospel leader. I have color coded the cards so they match. 🙂
Once a child has made a match, you could place the cards in the appropriate space on your chart and then discuss the duty of that particular leader.
Another matching game, but with dice! You will need two large dice. You can create these using a box or purchase large foam dice on Amazon or at a party store. Place the cards on the sides of the dice. For the sixth side you could add a ‘Roll Again’ or ‘Free Match’.
Have the children roll both dice to try to roll a match. When a match is rolled, remove the cards, and place them on the chart on the chalkboard. Discuss the names and the duties of the leaders. Continue until all matches have been found.
