Sharing Time Ideas from the 2016 Outline
Introduce the doctrine: Show a picture of a child praying, and explain that the child is showing love and respect for God. Tell the children that you are thinking of a nine-letter word that means love and respect for God. Draw nine blanks on the board, one for each letter in the word reverence, and invite the children to guess letters. As they guess correct letters, write them in the appropriate blanks. You may want to have an older child help you. For younger children, show the picture and ask them how they know the child is being reverent. Have the children say together, “Reverence is love and respect for God.”
Encourage understanding: Ask the children to open their scriptures and read John 14:15. (If the children memorized this verse last year, you may want to ask them to recite it.) Ask the children how we show our love for Jesus Christ. Sing “Reverence Is Love” (CS, 31). Ask the children to put their hand on their heart each time they hear the word “reverence” or “reverent.”
Encourage application: Divide the children into small groups, and have them discuss ways they can show reverence for Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ in one of the following situations: when they are at church, when they pray, and when they are at home or with friends. Younger children could draw pictures of what they could do. Have some of the children share their ideas with the whole group. Encourage them to share their ideas with their families at home.
Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas
For this week’s Sharing Time I am getting some help from my amazing friend, Emilie, over at A Year of FHE. Last week Emilie shared an FHE idea that talked about Reverence. In her lesson idea she shared a story of an ant. I loved her story, and thought the children would too, so I decided to incorporate it into the lesson idea. Thank you for sharing, Emilie!
To go along with Emilie’s story of Grant the Rever-ant. I thought it would be fun to incorporate ants into the Introduce the Doctrine idea. Tell the children that you are thinking of a nine-letter word that means love and respect for God. Draw nine blanks on the board, one for each letter in the word reverence, and tell the children that you have hidden 9 ants in the room (under chairs) that have each of the letters. Have the children find the ants, and then invite some of the older children to come up and unscramble to word. I have included some ant clipart that you can print out and use (link below).
Once they have guessed the word, show them a sign or write this phrase on the board: “Reverence is love and respect for God.”
Grant the Ant Learns to be Rever-ANT
You will then read the story of Grant the Ant to the primary (you can find the story, HERE, on Emilie’s Blog). You could have them come to the front and sit on the floor around you. You could even print out lots of little ants and glue them onto popsicle sticks, and ask the children to raise up their ants every time they hear the word(s) Grant or Ant. When you ask them to listen for specific words, it helps the children to listen and pay attention. 🙂
After you have read the story, I thought it would be fun to play a little activity. Using the same ants on my printable (link below), print out a couple sheets, and write scenarios of children being reverent, and irreverent (you could use some examples from Emilie’s story).
Hide the ants around the room OR have them posted on a chalkboard or bulletin board. Invite a child up to the front to find an ant. Have them read the phrase on the back, and have them decide if that is a ‘Rever-ANT’ or an ‘Irrever-ANT’. You could have a chalkboard or 2 poster-board split into two categories (smiley face/frowny face; Reverent/Irreverent; etc.). Have the child place the ant in the category that they feel it goes under. You could even have places written on the backs of the ants, and ask the child how they could show reverence in that situation (Here are some ideas in the outline: home, church, when the pray, with friends, during FHE, etc.) .
Continue until all the ants have been found or until time runs out. To close, read John 14:15. Tell the children that we have been asked to be reverent, and when we are we are showing love for Heavenly Father. Bear your testimony and encourage the children to share what they have learned with their family during Family Home Evening.
