Sharing Time Ideas from the 2016 Outline
Introduce the doctrine: Write “I can show reverence for sacred places and things” on the board, and ask a child to read it to the whole Primary. Ask the children to close their eyes and to raise their hands if they can hear when you drop a coin or button. Tell the children that the church building is a sacred place and that sitting still and listening carefully is one way we can show our reverence. Invite the children to share several other things they can do in church buildings to show reverence.
Encourage understanding: Display a picture of Moses and the burning bush, and tell the story found in Exodus 3:1–10. Read aloud verse 5 and have the children listen for why the Lord asked Moses to take off his shoes. Explain that we do not have to take off our shoes to be reverent, but there are many things we can do to show reverence for sacred places and things.
Encourage application: Display some of the following pictures: a temple or a church building, a home, a family, someone praying, a child, the scriptures, a group of children, a Primary class, and the sacrament. Hold up a large cloth in front of all the pictures and remove one picture. Take away the cloth and have the children tell you which picture is missing. Show the missing picture and invite the children to share a way they can show reverence or respect for the place or thing in the picture. Repeat with the other pictures.
Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas
For this week’s idea I started working on an idea, but then I changed plans and decided to create a fun ‘Turkey’ themed sharing time. The idea goes right along with the outline, but with a little ‘Thanksgiving’ twist. Enjoy!
Begin your sharing time with the idea given in the outline, I think the children would love trying to see if they can hear a button drop. Write “I can show reverence for sacred places and things” on the board, and ask a child to read it to the whole Primary. Ask the children to close their eyes and to raise their hands if they can hear when you drop a coin or button. Ask the children if they know of any places that are sacred. Have them raise their hands to share their ideas. Discuss reverence, and explain that it is more than sitting still and listening.
Tom the Reverent Turkey
For the next activity, you will be using my ‘Tom Turkey’, there are several different ways you could play this, here are a few ideas that I had in mind.
At the front of the room have a chalkboard with 3 different columns (church, temple, home, or any other sacred place). I would suggest finding a picture of each of the places and placing it at the top of each column. This will help the children to know which place it is.
In each column have 3 Tom Turkeys without feathers. Tom’s feathers will be all over the primary room, and on the back of each feather will be pictures, scenarios, and/or scriptures. I would include reverent and irreverent pictures/scenarios/scriptures. I found some great clipart to use for the feathers over on Susan Fitch’s blog, HERE. She shared a huge bundle for FREE. She also has some great pictures of Temples and of a church building that you could use for your lesson. I also used images from LDS.org, HERE.
Tell the children that these are some of Tom’s favorite places, but he needs help knowing how he should act at each one. Explain to the children that they are going to be finding feathers, and then deciding which place it belongs to OR if it belongs at all.
Invite the first child to come up to the front and find a feather. You could ask the pianist to play a reverent song while the children finds the feather, you could even invite the children to sing while they search. Once they have found the feather, have them look at the back of the feather and show or read it to everyone.
After they have looked at the picture or read the scenario/scripture, have them decide which turkey or place it belongs to. Some will fit with more than one, but some will match specific places.
Continue finding feathers until time runs out or until all the feathers have been found.
Another Way to Play
If you don’t want to have 3 turkeys, just use one. Have one Tom at the front of the room, and have feathers hidden. Have the children take turns finding feathers, and decide whether the item on the back is showing reverent behavior or irreverent behavior.
To close, you could do the Encourage Application given in the outline.
